Bob Dylan starts "Forever Young," a favorite of Paul Wellstone, with these words most wise:

"May God bless and keep you always

May your wishes all come true

May you always do for others

.....and let others do for you.

Suddenly I felt the whole upright shelf, some six feet high and made of fragile plastic and cardboard, come tumbling down around me. After one long crash, I found myself surrounded by broken glass and pickle juice.

Pam, my wife, and I had just moved to Minneapolis. I had decided to pick up some quick supplies at the grocery store next door.

Shopping with my Amigo mobility scooter is normally very convenient for me since I walk with difficulty and pushing a grocery cart is relatively slow.

Our first priority, of course, as newcomers to town was to get some paper plates. After tooling around the aisles of the store, I finally found only two packs of paper plates. But, they were on the very top shelf – not in the “paper aisle” but with pickles and condiments. No problem, I thought.

I grabbed the vertical uprights of the grocery shelf and pulled myself up from my scooter’s seat to reach the top shelf. And then it all came down.

“Are you alright?” I heard a stocking clerk yell after the whole display shelf came crashing to the floor.

Yes, I was.

“I’m sorry,” I said. I quickly scooted out of the aisle, pretending to be just another shopper while two other employees came with a bucket, big cardboard box and mop and unhappily proceeded with their unusual cleanup.

But, of course, I was not just another shopper. I wondered how practical it would be for the security guy to ban me from ever shopping there again.

Fast forward three years. After completing an online survey about the grocery store’s services and highlighting my favorite checkout guy, Jerry, who is particularly helpful (such as tying each grocery bag) for me, I can scoot into the store and have up to three employees offer (without asking) to help me reach for this or that and pack my basket. Positive feedback travels fast.

And I have learned to not try to reach for the top display by pulling myself up on unstable shelving. Yes, sometimes I need help grocery shopping. And I ask for it.

* When have you needed to set self-sufficiency aside and rely on the agility of others?
